Programmes Available

The Time Road (Key Stage 1 & 2)
Based around the museum's 'Time Road' displays, this programme looks at the changes which have occurred during the last 100 years of motor transport. Beginning with modern cars, children are taken back step-by-step to the horse drawn era of the 1890's. The session concentrates on topics such as car shapes, wheels, tyres and seat belts, and ends with a short trip in a period motorcar from the museum collection.

Literacy Day (Key Stage 1)
The programmes offer a variety of activities that promote literacy teaching. Children visit the museum's 1930's cinema to view a screening of children's stories as well as hearing a story read by museum staff using a period motorcar to bring the tale to life. Children also receive a guided tour of the museum during which there is an opportunity for them to dress up in period costume. A short ride in one of the museum's period cars is also offered.

Britain Since the 1930's (Key Stage 2)
This visit provides children with an understanding of some of the major changes that occurred from around the time of the Second World War up to the present. A slide presentation illustrates awareness of changes in population sizes and vehicle numbers and there is also the opportunity to discuss more current issues such as traffic congestion, pollution and accidents using graphs and data. Children also have the opportunity to tour the museum and ride in one of the museum's period cars.

Road Safety Day (Key Stage 2)
The Road Safety programme explores some important road safety issues in order to increase knowledge and awareness through practical demonstration and experience. The visit begins with a question and answer session on the development of safety features on modern cars. Children then investigate car-stopping distances and are asked to estimate the distance of a demonstration car. Also included in the day is a tour of the museum and a ride in a period car.

History of Transport (Key Stage 2 & 3)
This session allows children to look at change over time, especially related to the development of the motorcar. As well as an illustrated talk by an Education Officer children spend time in the museum riding in a period car from the museum collection that illustrates at first hand the differences between old and new cars.

Additional programme options
In addition to the advertised programmes, the following activities can also be pre-booked to form part of the education experience on the day:
�  Sketching � paper and drawing pencils can be made available for artwork at no additional charge.
�  The Road Safety Grotto � particularly suitable for Key Stage 1 and younger Key Stage 2 groups, the grotto covers a variety of road safety issues and includes input from a member of museum staff.

As well as its internationally famous collections, school visits can also include a number of additional activities that will provide children with a day out to remember. These include:
�  The Land Rover 4 x 4 Off-Road Experience � a 12 minute ride around the centre's off road course (5 years +)
�  The Miniature Roadway � children can drive roadway cars around a course navigating roundabouts and junctions (4 � 11 years, subject to height restrictions)
(These activities are subject to additional charges and need to be booked in advance).

The Museum Gift Shop
The Gift Shop is open throughout the day and groups may wish to allocate time during their visit for a visit. The shop sells reasonably priced souvenirs and gifts. Additionally, fixed price gift bags containing souvenir gifts can be purchased by the school if arranged in advance of a visit.
