MONTE CARLO RALLY 1963
It turned out to be the most severe European winter in living memory with the Monte Carlo Rally became an endurance test. Two thirds of the three hundred and forty two starters were eliminated by the time the exhausted crews crossed the finishing line in Monte Carlo. The master of all conditions, Eric Carlsson, fresh from a third consecutive win on the RAC Rally, came away with the top honours, but the Minis were beginning to show their mettle, with Paddy Hopkirk on his first international drive in a Mini being placed sixth overall. The line up of cars was stunning from Ford Cortinas, Anglia Zodiacs and Falcons to Citroen DS' and little Renaults (one driven by Maurice Gatsonides - he of the Gatso gun) and, of course, Saabs and Minis.

ALPINE RALLY 1963
After the excesses of the 1963 winter, the Alpine Rally was run in sunny June. The annual joust with the mountains started from Marseilles, taking in hill climbs and special stages over Europe's best passes. This event turned out to be a David and Goliath battle between the Minis of BMC and the Falcons from Ford. It turned out to be a Mini benefit event, but with a strong showing from the TR4s and Reliant Sabres.
