THE GAS TURBINE FILMS

Following on from its pioneering work with the jet engine during the Second World War, Rover decided to use its expertise to try to develop the Gas Turbine engine primarily for automotive use. This collection of films was made to promote and demonstrate the potential of the gas turbine. Unfortunately, although Rover were successful in many respects, they never managed to get over the problems of fuel consumption and cost of manufacture.
TWENTY-FOUR HOURS TO HISTORY (1963)
Car numbered '00' becomes the very first Gas Turbine car to run in an international motoring event and does so with great success at the Le Mans 24 Hour Race of 1963. The car, built in co-operation with BRM and built on a BRM Grand Prix racing chassis, is shown testing at Mira, during qualifying for Le Mans, as well as in the race itself in the hands of Graham Hill and American team-mate Richie Ginther. (14 minutes)
THE END OF THE BEGINNING (1965)
Following the success of the lone Rover-BRM in the Le Mans race of 1963, now comes the story of more intensive development, and the car's return to Le Mans in 1965. (23 minutes)
BRITAIN'S FIRST SMALL INDUSTRIAL GAS TURBINE (c.1952)
Made in the early Fifties, this promotional film was produced to demonstrate the advantages of the remarkably small and powerful Rover 1S60 Gas Turbine (1 shaft 60 BHP) engine unit. (7 minutes)
